Proctology deals with various conditions, such as: anal pain, anal bleeding or blood in the stool, continuous and persistent abdominal pain, internal or external hemorrhoids, colon congestion, irritable bowel syndrome, abdominal cramps, abdominal pain, nausea, constipation, and diarrhea—generally affecting the colon and anus. The proctologist diagnoses and treats all of the aforementioned proctological conditions. They carefully evaluate the various treatment options necessary for the patient’s recovery, often collaborating with other specialists, particularly the gastroenterologist, who treats disorders of the stomach, intestines, and the entire digestive system.The specialist’s initial approach involves a proctological examination. The purpose of this examination is to analyze and understand the symptoms reported by the patient and thus identify an appropriate treatment plan. Through a “rectal examination,” the specialist will be able to identify the underlying causes of the patient’s condition and, if necessary, order additional tests to select the most appropriate treatment plan for the diagnosed condition.
